Patagonia's culture evolved from the passions of Mr. Chouinard, an outdoors enthusiast who has developed a deep interest in environmental causes. Mr. Chouinard started in retailing nearly 40 years ago, when he began selling the climbing pitons that he first fashioned for his own use.
